Learning Center Instructor
Summary
This position is responsible for supervising School on Wheels’ Learning Center in skid row, including developing programs and curriculum, instructing students and overseeing volunteers.
Major Responsibilities
- Develop and implement curriculum for after-school and summer programs for Grades K through 12 students.
- Organize and supervise the after-school program at the center.
- Create and maintain a positive, structured environment conducive to learning.
- Recruit, train and manage volunteers who tutor or assist in the learning center.
- Develop partnerships with external organizations/ groups to bring workshops to students to enhance learning.
- Organize, create and supervise other activities for students, including art projects and field-trips.
- Serve as the liaison between SOW and the LAUSD and district Homeless Liaison Officer.
- Partner with local schools to ensure our program is meeting student needs.
- Conduct intake interviews with families and assists with student’s school enrollment.
- Ensure requests for backpacks, school supplies and uniforms are met.
- Perform other functions as required.
Qualifications
- Three years experience working in a classroom/educational environment. Teaching experience a plus, preferably working with at-risk children.
- One to three years experience managing volunteers.
- Spanish-language skills required.
- Ability to perform in a team environment, while working independently.
- Ability to independently prioritize and manage multiple tasks and satisfactorily meet deadlines and desired outcomes.
- Ability to listen and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people; excellent oral, written, and presentation skills.
- Excellent computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to represent School on Wheels in the highest manner and exemplify School on Wheel’s values, integrity and ethics.

- Evening and weekend work required.
- Travel required; valid California drivers license, auto insurance and use of personal vehicle.

Regional Coordinator (Various Locations)
Summary
This position is responsible for managing a geographic region of School on Wheels (SOW). This includes recruiting and supporting volunteer tutors and coordinators, establishing, expanding and encouraging School on Wheels’ programs in shelters, motels, group foster homes and other homeless locations, raising awareness of SOW’s mission and goals and making presentations to community groups, businesses, and other organizations
Job Scope
The Regional Coordinator manages the activities of all volunteer personnel within the region, including volunteer Tutor Coordinators (TCs) and tutors.
Major Responsibilities
Regional Volunteer Personnel
- Recruit new tutors and TCs to ensure an ongoing supply to meet the needs of the region.
- Train new volunteers and educate them regarding SOW’s tutoring policies and guidelines.
- Match tutors with children who need them and reassign tutors when their students move.
- Work with TCs to ensure children are provided with tutors, in as timely a manner as possible. At shelters with no coordinators, act as the coordinator, keeping in close contact with the tutors.
- Communicate with, support, encourage, and connect with volunteers (through frequent visits, email, and telephone) and be responsive to their needs.
- Conduct periodic group meetings with TCs and tutors to provide sense of community, share ideas/resources, and to provide feedback and input to improving the process.
- Develop volunteer thank you and related appreciation events throughout the year.
- Develop programs to increase volunteer recruitment, retention and effectiveness.
- Provide supplies for the coordinators, tutors and students.
Regional Shelters/Locations
- Research region and identify locations where homeless children live.
- Make presentations to appropriate personnel at shelters, motels, foster homes and other homeless organizations/agencies to educate them regarding SOW and its work.
- Work with shelter staff to ensure appropriate supply of tutors and access to tutoring areas.
- Act as regional spokesperson to shelter staff and the community at large, building and protecting SOW’s reputation of integrity, compassion, and effectiveness.
- Organize and coordinate student events such as art or music workshops, or holiday parties held in shelters, public places, or, SOW’s facilities.
Regional Presentations
- Research, identify and meet with individuals, civic and religious groups, businesses, educational and other organizations within the region and make presentations to promote SOW and ask for their help in recruiting, providing supplies, and other areas.
- Participate with regional volunteers to create fund-raising ideas and events.
Reporting and Administration
- Monitor and update cumulative number of coordinators, tutors, students, and supplies distributed, using Access database.
- Encourage and support TCs and tutors in logging tutoring hours.
- Update Access database with information about shelter/motel contacts.
- Develop and maintain internal controls and policies for all disbursement of funds.
- Provide all required reports and analyses.
